Mrs. Watson: Yes, please. I'm Mrs. Watson, and this is my son Vickywho drove me here. I've come for my operation

Lesson 3 Have you taken anything for the headache?
"Are you...?"
"Have you...?"
"Can I...?"
"Do you...?"
eg: A couple of days. 几天
eg: A couple of paracetamols.
eg: A couple of minutes.
"I think you've probably just eaten something a bit rich for you."
接着,医生还使用了"Have you taken...?"
Pharmacist: Are you drinking plenty of water-bottled water?
Patient: I've had a few sips of water-I feel terribly thirsty.
Pharmacist: Have you taken anything? Did you bring anything with you from home?
Patient: I've only got these indigestion tablets.
Pharmacist: Can I see you the packet?
Patient: Here they are, look.
Parmacist: Have you taken anything for the headache?
Patient: I've taken a couple of paracetamols for the headache. That's all.
Parmacist: Do you feel tired?
Patient: Worn out. I can hardly keep my eyes open.
Parmacist: Well, I think you've probably just eaten something a bit rich for you. You know-you are not used to it. I'm sure you'll be all right in a couple of days with what I'm going to give you.

Lesson 4 Do you have any alergies?

"What...?"
"Will I...?"
"Is that...?"
"Are you sure...?"
"They'll block you off pretty quick"
"You must come straight back."

Patient: What's that?
Parmacist: It's a preparation called DIA-STOP. Take two with water now and then another before you go to bed. Then just one, morning, noon and night for three days after that. They'll block you off pretty quick. Now, it's improtant you don't eat anything for 24 hours-it's just go straight through you. You can drink water and nothing else for a couple of days.
Patient: No alcohol! Oh-
Pharmacist: And take these rehydration salts as well. Three a day in half a glass of bottled water, preferably not fizzy. The salts replace the minerals the diarrhoea has taken out- very important. Before you know where you are, you'll be as right as rain.
Patient: Will I? Is that all?
Pharmacist: That's all you need, I should say. Just trust me.
Patient: It doesn't seem much.
Pharmacist: No-but if all you have got is diarrhoea, I promise you it will work. If it doesn't work-and this is very important-you must come straight back here by this time tomorrow and we'll get a doctor to see you .

Lesson 5 Reassurance and cautionary advice
"Just tell me if there's anything you don't understand and I'll explain it again."
Doctor: Okay. That will be 27 Euros.
Patient: 27 Euros! It seems a lot to me.
Doctor: Well, this is the simplest treatment we have for your condition as you fave described it to me. And the most effective, according to what you have told me. I can find something more expensive, if you like.
Patient: Ah no, that'll be fine. I'll try what you are giving me.
Doctor: I'm sure you will be all right. Enjoy the rest of your holiday. Be careful of what you eat and drink. No unwashed fruit or salads, no undercooked food, no tap water and no alcohol until you are fully better. Don't eat or drink off dodgy stalls or stands- only properly cleaned shops and restaurants. All right?
Patient: All right. I'll do as you say.
Doctor: Are you sure you've understood everything I've said? Just tell me if there's anything you don't understand and I'll go over it all.

对话中,有一个词“progress”意为“改善;好转”之意,比如: "I just don't seem to be making any progress at all" 好像没有什么好转呀。 I'm worse in fact. Let me ask you a few questions, just to see if we've missed something, or to see if you've left anything out.""(我再问你几个问题,看看我们遗漏了什么,还需要补充点什么。)

Patient:Good morning, doctor. Same old thing- heartburn. It seems to be getting worse. I'm sick of it.

Patient: Yes, something like that. that's about how often I've been coming to see you. And I don't seem to be getting any better. I'm worse in fact. I just don't seem to be making any progress at all. Doctor:That doesn't sound too good, does it? Lesson 8 Introducing oneself to a new colleague
(美国英语中,通常用"Nice to meet you" )。
而“Have you been...?” I've been to Spain, though." 这时,护士2接着问:“Where did you go?”
Rushed off our feet is an expression that means "very busy".
A: Good morning, have you just joined us?
B: Yes, it's my first day. I've just arrived-not late, am I?
A: No, of course not. Pleased to meet you. My name is Eileen-what's yours?
B: Rosario-from Spain. Nice to meet you.
A: Spain, eh? Lovely. What part of Spain?
B: Madrid. The big city.
A: It's the capital, isn't it?
B: Won't you miss it, oming to a little place like this out in the sticks? No-I'm glad to get away. You can get tired of big cities, you know-all those people, all the traffic, the rush hour. I could have gone to London instead of here, but I didn't want to-not just yet.
A: No, I suppose not. I don't London, myself.
B: Have you ever been, you know-to Madrid?
A: No, never. I've been to Spai, though. On holiday with my boyfriend.
B: Where did you go?
A: One of the Costas, I think it was. Sitges, was it? About three or four years ago,... was really wonderful-we had a great time.
B: Whatever has made you come to somewhere like this, when you've got Sitges and places like that to work in?
A: Well, I want to see the world a bit while I'm still young. Plus, I'd like to learn some English-and get some professional hospital experience. This is my first proper post.
B: Well, you'll get plenty of experience in this job. We're very busy-all the time. Permanently. Rushed off our feet, sometimes.
A: Good, I like to be busy.
B: You will love it here, then. Where did you train?
A: In madrid. At the Nursing College and then at the Santa Maria Hospital.
